Connect New People with God through Prayer
Submitted by Zeny Vidacak, SQ Pastor
Part-way through evangelism meetings in northern Mongolia, I was reflecting on how the series of meeting was going, when I sensed God asking me to invite the people to stay for a prayer time after the next meeting. I did, expecting a small number to stay.
That night we spent additional extra hour in prayer. This experience was amazing and it became the key to the success of the series
As I wrapped up the message for the night, I said something like, “We have talked about God but now we want to communicate with God and experience Him. There would be some of you here who want to know Him better and who would like to ask Him for something and who would like Him to answer you. If you would like to stay behind, we would like to pray with you and for you.”
Imagine my surprise as almost all of the 100 people in attendance stayed behind! For a moment I did not know what to do. What I knew I did not want to do was to pray one single prayer from the pulpit on behalf of all of them. I assigned members of my team to lead small groups of 8-10 people, and gave them two simple instructions:
- Don’t get into prayer immediately. First get to know the people by asking them about their names, let them share briefly about themselves. Let people get to know each other briefly
- Let each person present their prayer needs and then get into prayer time.
That night we spent additional extra hour in prayer. This experience was amazing and it became the key to the success of the series.
WHY? I believe it is because
- People were given a chance to exercise their faith and to expect God to work in their lives
- People connected with God, our team and each other
This personal and spiritual connecting made their hearts more receptive to the messages, and ultimately to God and His Word.
